Behind the scenes

The opportunity to work collaboratively on a project with the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has been a pinnacle moment in the course of my life and work as an artist. It is, indeed, a high honour to have been selected by the RCM for this special project. It is worth mentioning that as an Indigenous artist, in particular, this partnership with the RCM also ticks a few “cultural boxes,” as it were—the most obvious of these involves the prominence of circularity inherent within the Indigenous worldview, such as the “circle of life” or the Medicine Wheel. So, I am delighted to co-create an artistic product with the RCM whose own organizational raison d’être involves nothing less than the creation of a circle… the coin!

The other “boxes” pertain to endurance and to mediums. I believe that art, and its message, is more important than the artist. Thus, as an artist, l sometimes wonder about the endurance of what I create and its ability to survive me and continue to impart its message(s) into the future. In the case of my own chosen medium and substrate of archival ink and illustration board, this longevity extends no more than about 150 years. Consequently, I’ve always been in awe of my Indigenous ancestors who were able to transmit their own cultural knowledge in the form of petroglyphs inscribed into the bedrock, as they must surely have known that their creations would survive far, far into the future. Indigenous people refer to bedrock, and its precious minerals and metals as the “bones” of Mother Earth. Of course, it is metallic bones that are the very medium of the RCM and its craft, and so I am thrilled by the thought of my images being rendered in these most foundational elements of the earth, and thus like the ancient petroglyphs, ensuring the continuity of their messages for centuries and even millennia.
