Mark V. Nadjiwan, Artist and member of the Crane clan

“Among the Anishinabek, Ajijaak (the Crane) is a principal Chieftain Doodem (clan). The Crane Chiefs were given the responsibility of communicating with those in the world outside of the communities. It is thought by some that this role of Ajijaak was assigned by the Creator due to the strength of its call. It is told that long ago, Ajijaak was asked to summon all beings to a large gathering, and this was accomplished by Ajijaak filling the skies with its characteristic call over great distances to be heard by all. The design on this coin depicts the Sandhill Crane, the dominant crane species throughout the Great Lakes region generally, and certainly in the territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, where they are plentiful—one frequently hears their unmistakable call often from many kilometres away.”

“It was an honour to collaborate with artist Mark Nadjiwan on the Clan Animals series. I was deeply moved by the meaning behind each clan animal, and I was captivated by Mark’s precise, powerful style. Our team took great care to preserve his vision, enhancing each coin with engraved textures beneath the paint to elevate the storytelling. This series is a tribute to the teachings these animals carry, messages we hope will resonate with collectors and be shared for generations to come.”
