A live performance by an artist or group is a magical experience based on a shared love for music. Canada’s many folk festivals deliver that same excitement but on a much bigger scale—there’s more space, more people, more music, more fun! Summertime is music time in Canada, and our eighth Fun and Festivities coin highlights the many music festivals that take place in our cities and towns. You can almost hear the crowd as the musicians take the stage in this design, which celebrates our music-filled summer nights.

Design:

Designed by Steve Hepburn, your coin celebrates the folk festivals that fill the air with music on warm summer nights. A viewpoint from the back of the stage places the focus on the performers: the banjo player and percussionist in the foreground, and the guitar-playing singer who is facing the crowd. The image is framed by stylized icons that represent popular outdoor activities and sights in Canada: (clockwise from top) Niagara Falls; a Christmas tree; a rodeo; wine tasting; dogsledding; folk music; cherry blossoms; maple syrup tasting; whale watching; tulips; coastal drives; and the aurora borealis. The obverse features the year “2019” and face value “3 DOLLARS”, and the framed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • Folk festivals aren’t just a showcase of folk singers and songwriters—they also feature storytellers, craftspeople, food, workshops, dancers and others performers.
  • Folk festivals aren’t limited to a single musical genre, either. They can include performances of traditional music, Celtic, blues, bluegrass, gospel and more. It’s a great opportunity to discover a new artist or re-discover a favourite musical act, whether local or international.

Packaging:

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box.
