Mark V. Nadjiwan, Artist

“Mukwa Doodem (Bear Clan) is a near universal clan animal among the Indigenous Peoples of North America, and this includes the Anishinabek Nation. It is believed that among all those in the more-than-human world with whom people share the Earth, Indigenous Peoples have long believed that Mukwa possesses the most human-like qualities, and so, has much to teach us about life and ourselves. Mukwa is also said to possess intimate knowledge of the plant world and, thus, their medicinal properties; in this way, Mukwa is also understood to be a teacher and healer among the People. But perhaps more than this, Mukwa’s principal role as a clan animal is that of a protector and guardian. Mukwa’s strength and wisdom serve as a formidable protection to ensure the safety and well-being of the Anishinabek. Today, some communities are aligning their various administration functions with traditional clan roles and responsibilities. To this end, community policing and law enforcement are designated as Bear Clan, for the reasons stated above.”

“It was an honour to collaborate with artist Mark Nadjiwan on the Clan Animals series. I was deeply moved by the meaning behind each clan animal, and I was captivated by Mark’s precise, powerful style. Our team took great care to preserve his vision, enhancing each coin with engraved textures beneath the paint to elevate the storytelling. This series is a tribute to the teachings these animals carry, messages we hope will resonate with collectors and be shared for generations to come.”
