The animal emblem of Saskatchewan, Odocoileus virginianus is highly adaptive to a wide variety of environments within Canada, and can often be seen gracefully grazing near woodland edges or in pastures. However, it is easily startled, and when threatened, the deer raises its brown tail like a warning flag as it bolts, flashing the white underside that gave the species its name.
Like most members of the deer (Cervidae) family, only the male (buck) white-tailed deer has antlers, which are used to assert dominance during the fall rut. These imposing features are composed of velvet-covered cartilage that hardens into bone. They are shed shortly after reaching peak growth for the year, and a new set begins to grow the following spring, which makes the white-tailed deer’s antlers among the fastest-growing mammal bones in the world.
The coin’s obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
