  • Last coin in the series. The three-coin Clan Animals series celebrates clan animals central to Anishinabek identity and teachings. Each work reflects their enduring role as spiritual guides and living links between the Anishinabek and the animal world.
  • First RCM collaboration. We’re proud to feature the work of Mark Nadjiwan in this three-coin series—his first collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mint. Mark is a member of Neyaashiinigmiing Unceded First Nation near Owen Sound, Ontario, part of the Anishinabek Nation. His striking pen-and-ink style, inspired by the Woodland tradition, is recognized across Canada and internationally. Through his unique artistic voice, Mark brings powerful cultural storytelling to life, and we’re honoured to showcase his work in this meaningful series.

Designed by Anishinaabe artist Mark V. Nadjiwan, the coin’s reverse shows Nigig (the Otter) gazing toward the flowing current in the afternoon light, backed by a curving riverbank dotted with windswept pines. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

“It can be said that the playful nature of Nigig speaks to its role as a healing animal—in fact, otter skins were used as pouches for the sacred items of the Midewiwin medicine society. It is not hard to understand how play is both a balancing and healing balm, with its infusion of light and laughter into a world that seems to grow ever more challenging. We can take this teaching of Nigig and think more broadly about what it is that we might carry in our own figurative individual and collective medicine pouches, in order to heal ourselves and the world; certainly, this would include such tools as traditional teachings, the arts, sciences, law, even our politics and economics. While it is true that some of these can and have contributed to our modern predicaments, we have the ability, and even the responsibility, to creatively re-invent them and apply them instead as positive agents for change. And let us never forget the example of Nigig, who balances the serious work of life in the world with play and lightness.”
