“The extreme high relief presented the perfect opportunity to have some fun with the concept, drawing inspiration from the ornamental aesthetic of Victorian-era coats of arms. Not known for their subtlety, many of the designs during that time period were fanciful creations that heavily played up the decorative elements. Loosely based on the Arms of Canada, this work rearranges some of the elements (mantling, supporters and florals), adds some details (maple leaves and keys), and omits others (flags), to present a unique, but unofficial, rendition of a well-known design. Can you spot all the differences?”

“Heraldic emblems are not intended to be fixed or invariable images. Although relying on a precise description (in the specialized language of blazon), each emblem - whether a coat of arms, flag or badge - can be rendered artistically in many different ways. This coin is heraldry at its essence. While not an exact representation of the Royal Arms of Canada we are used to seeing, it contains a faithful rendition of its shield, crest and motto, accompanied by a playful reinterpretation of the other elements. It is a great example of artistic creativity that follows the traditions of heraldry.”

Ryan Poser, Engraver-3D Artist

“I started with the lion and the unicorn to set the tone for how the rest of the organic forms would be sculpted—they also struck me as the most fun place to begin. Figuring out how all the different components would interact at such extreme heights, while still respecting manufacturability and material flow, was very challenging. Luckily, I have some experience with EHR technology, and with help from colleagues in Engraving and Engineering, we were able to bring it together very nicely in the end.”
