At the centre of it all, a compass rose sits beneath the angled rhodium-plated gnomon that casts a shadow across its coin base, indicating local solar time when placed in direct sunlight and pointed in the direction of true north.

The celebration of exploration and discovery continues at the centre of the design, where a compass rose supports the rhodium-plated, brass gnomon that casts a shadow onto the engraved dial plate, indicating local solar time. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
